Summary: Whelan suggests that companies must do more than just set up social media accounts and start posting about their business and products.
This article is an excellent summary of what I frequently see wrong with the strategy used by many companies with their social media. It seems that many people feel setting up Twitter and Facebook accounts and shouting to the world about the merits of their product, service, or treatment is their best use of social media.
I tell my clients, time and again, that the "new" Internet is about creating unique content. Organic listings on Google depend on regularly updated, relevant content on your website or blog. And people will not engage you if you do not provide them with original, interesting content.
To make the social media work successfully for your company, you must generate interesting, unique content. It doesn't have to be overly polished or extensively researched. Most people do not expect this from your social media engagement. But people do expect you to engage them by providing more than messages about how great your product is.
If you want to fully take advantage of what the social media has to offer, you'll need to "step up your game," either by hiring a content creator to help you provide engaging content, or learn how to do it yourself by reading articles and books on the subject or taking seminars to improve your skills in this area.
