Summary: Harris suggests that the "official" corporate website will "take a backseat" to social presence of companies on popular social media sites, such as Facebook and Youtube.
While this article points out some important trends related to social media, AMC disagrees with the idea that people will no longer be interested in visiting corporate websites due to the social media.
We do, however, believe that corporate websites must adapt and integrate with Web 2.0 technologies. It is no longer acceptable to have a "static" website that reads like a brochure. People expect modern websites to provide timely, current information that they cannot get elsewhere, and they expect to be able to share that information with their social network.
At Alternative Marketing Connections, we foresaw this trend over a year ago, and made a firm commitment to only build websites with tight social media/Web 2.0 integration that is easy for our clients to update without having to rely exclusively on their web designer to add new content. This is why we only build websites using modern, content management systems (CMS), such as Joomla, Wordpress and Spruz. We also build social media integration into every site.
The corporate website will not become obsolete, but it must embrace and incorporate Web 2.0 technologies and social media to stay relevant.
