A 360 — No, Make That 3/50 — View of Your Local Economy
Local businesses—how can you support them? The steps you need to take are simple, as outlined by the 3/50 Project:
It is far too easy to throw your money away, outside of your community. Granted, there are times when we do need to shop at a big-box retailer, online, or out-of-state. However, remember this: according to sustainability expert Tim Mitchell, 80 cents of every dollar spent at a national store will immediately leave your area. By contrast, spending your dollar at a locally owned business will circulate through your community 6 to 15 times.
Simply spending $50 per month in local businesses will result in $42.6 billion in revenue (U.S. Labor Dept. Report, Feb. 6, 2009). So, how many of us need to spend $50 for this to happen? Only half the population. Every citizen’s actions count. Your actions count! You yourself can make this work in your community by spreading your $50 among three of your favorite area stores. This gives us hope for keeping small businesses open, and for revitalizing the local economy.
Here at Alternative Marketing, we believe in our own economy. All of our staff live here in the South Sound. We also work with area colleges through internships to train individuals in web design, content creation, and social media management services. Together, we focus on helping local businesses improve their Internet presence, and ultimately their bottom line, through integration of user-updateable websites, social media management, and marketing support. Join us, think locally, act locally!
